Commissioned by Minerva Scientifica (Electric Voice Theatre), as part of their “Superwomen of Science” project, which partnered female composers with female scientists to create new work. Inspired by the dark fairy tales of writers such as Angela Carter and Roald Dahl, I turned microbiologist Dr Clare Taylor’s research into the life cycle of listeria (a genus of bacteria which are parasitic to mammals) into the kind of scary villain we might warn children about. However, I also tried to imagine it from a non-anthropocentric perspective - after all, it is only because listeria’s survival impacts negatively on our own that we despise it! Each instrument replicates the life stages of listeria’s behaviour.
